This year’s Homecoming officially kicks off with a special video message from a special alumnae. The complete schedule is unveiled here.
Whether it was participating in Step Sing or appearing on Price Theater’s stage, Carol Howington Cain ’82 has plenty of memories to share about her time on the Hill.
She will be recalling some of them in a special Homecoming 2020 video. Watch it here.
“We couldn’t think of a better way to reveal our schedule than hearing from one of our alums,” said Martha Pirkle, Director of Alumni and Community Relations. “Carol is well known in the area and around the country for her one-woman shows.”
Cain – a retired teacher, professional storyteller, actor and director – credits LC for shaping her life.
“This was where I was always supposed to be,” she said. “I never would have found me, I never would have found my talents and I never would have become the woman I am now if I had not spent time at LaGrange College.”
While Cain’s video anchors the website, there will be many online events during Homecoming, which has been shifted to a virtual weeklong celebration.
“Beginning Oct. 12, we will have a social media challenge every day,” Pirkle said. “For example, we’ll start with Red and Black Monday. Participants will be asked to snap a photo of themselves in red and black LC gear and tag it #LCProud for a chance to be featured on the college’s social media accounts.”
Another new opportunity will be virtual chats with faculty from across different disciplines.
“We often hear that one of the favorite activities in the past has been catching up with favorite faculty members,” Pirkle said. “There will be Zoom meetings set up throughout the week for alumni to check in with professors who impacted their lives.”
Mark ’97 and Barbie Everett Sheppard ’97 of Stafford, Virginia, said they are thrilled with this year’s format.
“Sometimes with families, schedules and distance, coming to campus isn’t always an option,” said Barbie Sheppard. “Given the nature of 2020, having virtual Homecoming is exciting because you can be a part of campus activities wherever you are. We hope more families will be able to join the celebration virtually this year.”
And of course, there will be class reunion celebrations.
“We’ll email an invitation to alumni that will include a link to register,” Pirkle said. “Once they register, we’ll send them the information on how to join their Zoom reunion.”
Pirkle said volunteers have been crucial.
“We have been working closely with reunion coordinators to plan various events and opportunities to engage our alumni in a meaningful and memorable way,” she said. “While this year’s event will be virtual, I think we have some fun and remarkable things planned to share with each other.”
